Start with the root and the fifth. Two notes. Pure structure, no emotional opinion — just the frame on which everything else gets hung. This is why power chords work (Root + 5) — they commit to nothing except weight.

Add the third and the chord suddenly has a personality. Major third: bright and positive. Minor third: dark and serious. One semitone separates them. That single semitone is the difference between happy and sad — and that is the whole secret of Western harmony.

Every other tone is a colour you're adding to that foundation. The b7 makes it bluesy. The major 7 makes it wistful. The b6 makes it serious and foreboding. You're not building a chord — you're mixing a feeling. The totem pole shows you what's in the mix.

Every number has two versions — and they feel like opposites. The 2 is gentle and pillowy. The b2 is hard and biting. The 6 floats and feels buoyant. The b6 is serious and foreboding. The 7 is wistful. The b7 is gritty. This is not a coincidence. The distance of one semitone — one piano key — flips the emotional charge completely. Composers have always known this. Now you do too.

The big wave is the S-curve itself. Root at the trough. Tritone at the zero crossing — weightless, unmoored, neither home nor away. Octave at the crest. This is the macro pattern: everything below the tritone has one gravitational quality, everything above has its mirror image.

Zoom in and the same pattern repeats inside each half. Three emotional axes run through the scale, each one mirrored across the tritone. Hard/Soft — the b2 is aggressive and bitey, the 7 is soft and yearning. Same intensity, opposite texture. Serious/Fun — the b3 is heavy and dark, the 6 floats and feels buoyant. Power — the 4 strains upward against gravity, the 5 stands settled on the ground.

Nobody designed this. It emerged from physics — from the mathematics of vibrating strings and resonating air. The tritone sits in the middle because of acoustics, not music theory. The emotional qualities of each interval follow directly from how their frequencies interact with the root. The pattern is self-similar at every scale because sound itself is fractal. You have been feeling this structure your entire life without knowing it was there.

The distance from the root to the tritone is the exact mirror of the distance from the tritone to the octave. Which means there are really only six unique interval relationships — each one appears twice, once on each side of the mirror. The b3 and the 6 are the same distance from the centre, in opposite directions. One sinks, one floats. One is serious, one is fun. Same structure. Opposite emotional charge. Composers who know this can flip the emotional world of a piece by substituting an interval for its mirror — and the listener feels it without knowing why.
